Under the Slates Σοφίτα
The attic, under the chestnut rafters, with a window in the roof for the stars.
Autumn in Koukouli. The beech forest turns copper from the top of the mountain down, and we light the first fire.

Each room was a different part of a merchant’s house, and still has the shape of it: a vault, a loom, a painted ceiling, a bay window, a roof full of stars. All have their own bathroom, wool blankets from our loom, and no television.
Under the chestnut rafters and the slates.
The attic, under the chestnut rafters, with a window in the roof for the stars.
The two best rooms of 1872: one for summer, one for receiving guests.
The top-floor room built for summer, with the wooden bay window, the sachnisi, and a bench the width of the room.
The reception room of 1872, under its painted ceiling of pears and garlands. Our largest room.
The family’s floor, around the kitchen and the big fireplace.
The room the family lived in through the snow: the big fireplace, and walnut cupboards carved in 1874.
A small corner room level with the walnut’s crown, with a desk under the window for writing letters.
Two windows onto the forest the house is named for, and a day bed for a third guest or a long afternoon.
Where the house kept its stores, now cool stone rooms with doors to the garden.
The old storeroom under a stone barrel vault, cool in summer, with its own door to the garden.
Where Kyra Vangelio’s loom stands, still threaded, beside a window onto the courtyard.
A house of its own at the end of the garden.
The mule stable at the end of the garden, now a small stone house for four with a kitchen of its own.
