The room’s story
This was where the Hatzigakis family kept what the house lived on: wheat, wool waiting for the trader, cheese in brine, the wine. The vault is built without mortar, stone leaning on stone, and it is the only part of the house that never let the weather in.
We cleaned it back to the stone, laid an oak floor over new heating, and opened the old loading door into a door to the garden. It is the coolest room in August and, with the heating under your feet, the snuggest in January. Dogs sleep here happily, and so do their people.

The plan
Katerina drew every room before the masons started, and redrew it when the walls turned out not to be where the old survey said. This is the room as it stands.
In the room
- Stone barrel vault, restored
- Own door to the garden
- Shower in a stone niche
- Dogs welcome
- Underfloor heating
