The room’s story
The oda was where the merchant received the people he did business with, and he wanted them impressed. A painter from Kapesovo spent the summer of 1874 on the ceiling: baskets of pears, garlands, birds, and in the middle a double-headed eagle, which in 1874 was a political statement.
When Katerina first climbed up here the ceiling was black with a century of smoke. A conservator from Ioannina cleaned it, a hand’s width a day, with soft bread and cotton. It took five months. We ask guests not to hang anything from it, and nobody has ever wanted to.

The plan
Katerina drew every room before the masons started, and redrew it when the walls turned out not to be where the old survey said. This is the room as it stands.
In the room
- The painted ceiling, 1874, cleaned by hand
