The room’s story
The attic was never meant for sleeping. It was for drying: walnuts, herbs, tobacco, and in a bad winter the laundry. When we relaid the roof we numbered every slate, replaced the rotten battens with chestnut from the next valley, and made a room under them.
There is a window in the roof directly over the bed. On a clear night, with the lamp off, you will see more stars than you knew there were. In snow the room is very quiet, and very warm, and the light in the morning is blue.

The plan
Katerina drew every room before the masons started, and redrew it when the walls turned out not to be where the old survey said. This is the room as it stands.
In the room
- Chestnut rafters, exposed
- A roof window over the bed
- A gable window facing Tymfi
- Shower room
- Reached by a steep wooden stair
