The room’s story
Every Zagori house of any size had two living rooms: a summer room at the top, open to the air, and a winter room near the kitchen, small-windowed and built around the fire. From November to April the whole Hatzigakis family lived, ate and mostly slept in here.
The cupboards along the wall are original, carved by a craftsman from Konitsa who signed the inside of one door. The keys still turn. From October, we lay the fire every afternoon; you only strike the match. Kanela has opinions about who sits closest to it.

The plan
Katerina drew every room before the masons started, and redrew it when the walls turned out not to be where the old survey said. This is the room as it stands.
In the room
- The house’s biggest fireplace, laid each evening
- Carved walnut cupboards with their iron keys
- Bath with a window
- Room for a cot
