The room’s story
The summer room was the family’s best room from May to September: high up, open to the air on three sides, and built out over the courtyard in a wooden bay, the sachnisi, so the whole valley comes in through five windows.
The bench along the bay is where the women of the house did their embroidery and watched who came up the path. It is where our guests now read, drink their tea, and fall asleep in the afternoon. The bay was the most rotten part of the house; it took the carpenter a whole winter, and it is exactly as it was.

The plan
Katerina drew every room before the masons started, and redrew it when the walls turned out not to be where the old survey said. This is the room as it stands.
In the room
- The sachnisi: a timber bay with five windows
- A cushioned bench along the bay
- King-size bed
- Bath with a view of the valley
- The coolest breeze in the house
