Pain at the front of the knee

Runner’s knee: an ache around or behind the kneecap on stairs, squats and long runs.

What it usually feels like

An ache around the kneecap, worse going downstairs, squatting, sitting for a long time with bent knees, or late in a run.

How long it usually takes

Six to twelve weeks for most people. It can come back if training jumps again, so we plan for that.

What helps

Reducing what aggravates it for a while, without stopping altogether, and strengthening the thigh and hip. Runners usually need a change to their training more than to their shoes.

We usually start with running assessment, 75 minutes, €90.

Something to start with at home

Exercise drawing in two steps: a figure standing sideways on a stair, then bending one knee to lower the other heel

Step-downs

  1. Stand sideways on the bottom stair, holding the rail.
  2. Slowly bend the knee on the stair and lower the other heel towards the floor.
  3. Keep the knee in line with your second toe.
  4. Touch the heel down lightly and straighten back up.

3 sets of 8, slowly. Go only as low as is comfortable.

After an ACL reconstruction

The long road back after a torn anterior cruciate ligament, from the first straight leg to your sport.

What it usually feels like

In the first weeks: a swollen, stiff knee and a thigh that will not switch on. Later: a knee that feels fine day to day, but not yet ready to trust.

How long it usually takes

Nine to twelve months to return to sports that involve cutting and turning.

What helps

Following your surgeon’s protocol, then a staged programme with clear tests between stages: range, strength, hopping, running, changing direction. We do not use the calendar alone to decide when you are ready.

We usually start with rehabilitation after surgery, 45 minutes, €50.

Something to start with at home

Exercise drawing in two steps: a figure lying with one knee bent, then lifting the straight leg

Straight leg raise

  1. Lie on your back, the other knee bent.
  2. Tighten the front of the thigh so the knee pushes straight.
  3. Keeping it tight, lift the leg to the height of the other knee.
  4. Hold for three seconds and lower slowly.

3 sets of 10, as your surgeon’s protocol allows.

Not sure this is you? Most people are not a textbook case. Book a first assessment and we will find out together.
