Achilles tendon pain

Stiffness and pain in the tendon above the heel, worst first thing in the morning. A classic in runners over thirty-five.

What it usually feels like

Stiffness in the Achilles when you get out of bed or after sitting, easing as you warm up, then aching later.

How long it usually takes

Three to six months. Tendons are slow, but they do get better.

What helps

Slow, heavy calf strengthening over several months, and a sensible adjustment to running. Stretching and rest on their own rarely fix it. Most runners keep running, less, while it recovers.

We usually start with sports rehabilitation, 45 minutes, €55.

Something to start with at home

Exercise drawing in two steps: a figure on the edge of a step up on the toes, then lowering the heel below the step

Heel raises on a step

  1. Stand on the edge of a step on the balls of both feet, holding the rail.
  2. Rise up onto your toes with both feet.
  3. Shift your weight onto the sore leg.
  4. Lower the heel slowly below the step, counting to four.

3 sets of 15, once a day. Pain up to 3 out of 10 is fine if it settles by the next morning.

Sprained ankle

Rolled it on a kerb, a trail or a basketball court. Treated well, it heals well; left alone, it tends to go again.

What it usually feels like

Pain and swelling on the outside of the ankle, bruising, and an ankle that feels unreliable on uneven ground.

How long it usually takes

Most sprains take four to eight weeks to get back to sport.

What helps

Early, gentle movement and walking as soon as you can, then balance and strength work. Balance training is the part people skip, and the part that stops it happening again.

We usually start with sports rehabilitation, 45 minutes, €55.

Something to start with at home

Exercise drawing: a figure balancing on one leg beside a kitchen counter

Single-leg balance

  1. Stand near a wall or the kitchen counter.
  2. Lift the good foot and balance on the sore one.
  3. Hold for thirty seconds, with a soft knee.
  4. When that is easy, close your eyes or turn your head slowly.

3 times 30 seconds, twice a day. Brushing your teeth is a good time.

Not sure this is you? Most people are not a textbook case. Book a first assessment and we will find out together.
