Shoulder pain and the rotator cuff

Pain when you lift your arm, reach behind you or lie on that side. Usually the tendons of the rotator cuff complaining about load.

What it usually feels like

An ache on the outside of the upper arm, sharper when you lift the arm out to the side or overhead, and often worse at night when you lie on it.

How long it usually takes

Expect six to twelve weeks of steady exercise. Night pain usually eases first.

What helps

Tendons like load, gradually. Rest makes them weaker and too much too soon makes them angrier, so the work is finding the middle. We build a programme that strengthens the shoulder a little more each week, and help with the pain along the way.

Most shoulders get better without injections or surgery. When one does not, we will tell you, and who to see.

We usually start with physiotherapy session, 45 minutes, €50.

Something to start with at home

Exercise drawing in two steps: a figure with forearms on a wall at shoulder height, then slid up overhead

Wall slides

  1. Stand facing a wall, forearms on the wall at shoulder height, elbows bent.
  2. Gently press your forearms into the wall.
  3. Slide them up as far as is comfortable, keeping the pressure.
  4. Slide back down slowly.

8 to 10 slides, once or twice a day. Some discomfort is fine; sharp pain means stop lower.

Frozen shoulder

A shoulder that becomes painful and then stiff over months. It does thaw. We help with the pain and keep you moving while it does.

What it usually feels like

A deep ache, then gradual stiffness: reaching up to a shelf or behind to fasten something becomes impossible. Often in people between forty and sixty, and more often with diabetes.

How long it usually takes

It is slow: often a year or more from start to finish, though most of that time is much better than the start.

What helps

In the painful phase, gentle movement and advice on sleep and pain relief. In the stiff phase, more stretching and strengthening. We explain what to expect in each phase, which takes a lot of the worry out of it.

We usually start with physiotherapy session, 45 minutes, €50.

Something to start with at home

Exercise drawing: a figure leaning on a table with one arm hanging and swinging in small circles

Pendulum swings

  1. Lean forward with your good hand on a table.
  2. Let the sore arm hang down, relaxed, like a rope.
  3. Rock your body gently so the arm swings in small circles.
  4. Change direction after ten circles.

30 seconds each way, a few times a day, especially before sleep.

Not sure this is you? Most people are not a textbook case. Book a first assessment and we will find out together.
