The map
Mikro Papingo, forty-five minutes by car. We drive you at seven.
Drakolimni, the dragon lake, sits in a hollow at 2,050 metres under the summit of Tymfi. The story is that two dragons, one on Tymfi and one on Smolikas across the valley, threw rocks at each other, and the lakes are where they missed.
The path climbs steadily from Mikro Papingo through beech and then pine to the Astraka refuge, three hours up, where you can have soup and a rest. From the refuge it drops across a high plateau of meadows and limestone pavement and climbs again to the lake. The lake is full of alpine newts; do not swim.
It is our longest walk and needs fitness and settled weather. We will look at the forecast with you the evening before.
What to take
Boots, three litres of water, warm and waterproof layers, lunch (we pack it), sun cream and a hat.
Tell us the evening before and we will pack lunch, check the forecast with you and, if it is one way, arrange the lift.
