The map
At the foot of the stair below Kapesovo, fifteen minutes by car. We drop you off.
Before there was a road, the only way into Vradeto, the highest village in the Zagori, was the skala: a stone staircase that zig-zags up a sheer cliff in more than a thousand steps. It is two hundred and fifty years old and in perfect repair.
It looks fearsome from below and is not. The steps are broad, the gradient is steady, and there is a wall on the drop side for most of the way. An hour and a quarter of climbing brings you out on the meadows above, and from there it is a flat forty minutes to Beloi, a rock platform on the edge of the Vikos gorge with the whole of it laid out below.
Walk back down the same way, or arrange for us to fetch you from Vradeto.
What to take
Water: there is none on the stair. A layer for Beloi, which is windy.
Tell us the evening before and we will pack lunch, check the forecast with you and, if it is one way, arrange the lift.
