What it is
When deposits build up below the gum line, the gum pulls away from the tooth and forms a pocket that a toothbrush cannot reach. Gum treatment cleans those pockets out, under local anaesthetic, one quarter or one half of the mouth per visit. We measure the pockets before and three months after, so you can see the numbers change.
Who it is for
People whose gums bleed when they brush, have receding gums, bad breath that will not go, or teeth that feel loose. Also recommended if you have diabetes, because gum disease and blood sugar affect each other.
Does it hurt? Honestly
We numb the area, so the cleaning itself should not hurt. Gums are sore for a day or two afterwards, like after a hard day of chewing.
Whatever we are doing, raise your left hand and we stop. How we work with nervous patients
Afterwards
- Take the painkiller you normally take, as the packet says, for the first evening if you need it.
- Warm salt water rinses from the next day.
- Brush gently but do brush; the gums heal faster clean.
