Periplous11–12 January, Thessaloniki

Applies to everyone, everywhere at the event

Code of conduct

Periplous is for everyone who builds, designs and ships for the web. We want every person there to have a good two days, and we will act to make sure they do.

Something wrong? Tell us.

  • In person

Anyone in a yellow crew shirt, or the conduct desk by the main entrance, open all day.

  • By phone or Signal

    +30 2310 555 0190

Answered by the conduct team from 08:00 to midnight on both days, and on the boat.

  • By email

    conduct@periplous.example

Read by Eleni Markou and Tomás Rey only. You can write without giving your name.

If your report is about Eleni or Tomás, write to crew@periplous.example and mark it for Nefeli Stavrou, who will handle it without them. In an emergency, call 112 first, then us.

The short version

Be kind to each other. Leave room for others to speak. If someone asks you to stop, stop. Harassment is not welcome in any form, and we will ask people who harass others to leave, without a refund.

What is not OK

This code applies to attendees, speakers, sponsors, volunteers and the crew, at the venue, at the lunch tables, at the lighthouse, on the boat and online around the event. It includes, and is not limited to:

Speakers: your slides and your jokes are covered too. If you are not sure whether something is OK, ask the programme team before the day, and we will help.

What happens after you report

  1. Within an hour

During the event, someone from the conduct team talks to you, somewhere private, and asks what you would like to happen. Nothing happens without asking you first, unless someone is in danger.

  2. The same day

We talk to the other person if you want us to, and decide what to do: a warning, asking them to leave, or removing them from this and future editions. We tell you what we decided.

  3. Afterwards

We write down what happened, without your name, and keep it for a year. If a speaker or sponsor was involved, we tell the board. We never publish names.

If you are not sure whether something is worth reporting, report it. The conduct team would rather hear about ten small things than miss one big one.

What we did last year

We publish a count every year, so you can judge whether we mean it. In Kalamata we received four reports. Three ended with a conversation and a warning, and one person was asked to leave on the first afternoon and has not been invited back. Two reports were about the same person.

This code is adapted by the association from community codes of conduct that many conferences share, and reviewed every year at the members' meeting. Suggestions: conduct@periplous.example. See also access at the venue.
